The dark green leaves and bright red berries are the perfect complement to the festive season and an opportunity to reflect on what Holly can tell us. The Holly essence is associated with anger, hatred and jealousy. In the season of good will perhaps this seems out of place. But Holly shares a much deeper story with us. Bach talked of Holly protecting us from everything that is not Universal Love. Anger is a reaction within the self – catalysed by external factors – but creating a reaction within. There is a darkness within that can only be resolved through light and love. Holly leaves have sharp prickles around the edges which force the leaves into a series of curves. Each leaf is set so that the maximum light is received no matter which direction it comes from and any light not absorbed is reflected within the dense canopy for other leaves to receive. It is often thought that Holly has prickles as a defensive measure to protect it from grazing. Yet the leaves at the top of the tree are typically flat and smooth without sharp prickles – lack of grazing threat or because they receive more light? Perhaps it is both. Bach taught us to focus on the positive aspects that the flowers could share with us and this is especially important with Holly. The structure of the tree shows us the duality of states. When a Holly type receives more light, allows in more light, it is transformed from prickly to smooth. The tree itself shows us that we are always looking for the light and are nourished by it. The tree is a living symbol of hope. And so it is with all of us. The more light we allow within us, the more we are transformed. As the solstice draws near, we wish you light, love and joy.
